What your body understands is that it was meant to work and to use calories, and you on your part, should understand that you have deliver your sleeping calories into actions. You have to put some muscles to work and thus burn off some unwanted portions of your body. Because you haven&#8217;t learned to enjoy healthy behaviors, you avoid them until there&#8217;s nothing else you can do but change. By then you are so mortified by your weight gain that you decide to do something drastic to get rid of it quickly. Many times, the very method you are using to solve your weight problem is actually creating the problem.</p>
	<p>For example, suppose you gained 3 lbs. over the weekend. Perhaps you fear that you must do something immediately. You are terrified that if you don&#8217;t do something, the weight will keep creeping up and up. So you decide to go on a fast until the three pounds are gone.</p>
	<p>First of all, fasting is a very drastic response to a 3 pound gain and secondly the mere act of fasting causes your metabolism to slow down thereby guaranteeing that you will struggle harder in the future! In this instance, overreacting is actually causing your weight problem.</p>
	<p>Here&#8217;s another example: let&#8217;s say you&#8217;ve gained 35 lbs. and none of your clothes fit. So you decide to start a serious diet&#8230;on Monday. In the meantime, you engage in a feast of &#8216;no-no&#8217;s&#8217; where you consume 2-5x&#8217;s more fat and calories than your body can process. When you finally start your diet, you are already at a deficit. Mentally you feel like a failure. Physically, you have more weight to lose now than you did last week. Many people go off their diet within the first few weeks of starting. If this is the case, you are actually guaranteeing future weight loss struggles. You&#8217;d probably be better off if you&#8217;d decided to do nothing at all.</p>
	<p>Another habit that will make you fat and sabotage your life is: believing without thinking. Many times in our desperation or fear we believe and act on what we hear from others (especially authority) without question.</p>
	<p>Here&#8217;s an example: buying the good ol&#8217; &#8216;Finish everything on your plate, there are children starving in Africa&quot; line. People from age 8 to 80 have heard this line so many times that they blindly believe, accept and act on it without question. It&#8217;s true, children are starving in Africa. However, finishing everything on your plate only makes you the processing plant for excess food that is guaranteed to make you fat.</p>
	<p>Instead of putting leftovers in the trash or in the refrigerator, you put them in your body and your body has no choice but to turn excess food into fat. Meanwhile, the children in Africa are completely unaffected. They are still starving. Continuing to habitually finish everything on your plate is an example of how you literally create your weight problem.</p>
	<p>So if you&#8217;re ready to take the leap and stop the struggle now, here&#8217;s a few things you can do:</p>
	<p>* Chew each bite at least 10 times. Put your food or utensil down between bites.</p>
	<p>* Remember, your stomach is the size of your fist.</p>
	<p>* Stop when you feel satisfied or have eaten a fist-size portion.</p>
	<p>* Always leave something on your plate to de-program yourself from automatic eating.</p>
	<p>* When satisfied, stop eating. If you&#8217;re at a restaurant, push your plate to the edge of the table so the waiter will take it. If you&#8217;re at home, get up immediately and throw the food in the trash or put it in storage for another meal.</p>
	<p>* Acknowledge your strength and self-control.</p>
	<p>* Tell yourself, &quot;I can do this.&quot;</p>
	<p>In closing, you have the power to challenge your thoughts and take note of any beliefs that don&#8217;t work for you. The great thing about doing this type of self-inventory is that when you realize how you are creating your results, you can take different actions and get different results. Once you access and utilize your ability to make positive changes you will feel more powerful, less insecure and better able to accomplish your goals and dreams.</p>

But when it comes it calories, the advice to consume fewer of them seems set in stone. After all, &quot;a calorie is a calorie&quot;, right? Wrong. For years, we&#8217;ve been told that if we &quot;eat less and exercise more,&quot; we&#8217;ll lose weight. That recommendation is based on the belief that we need burn more calories than we take in. But this doesn&#8217;t tell the whole story. As it turns out, it isn&#8217;t the amount of calories you consume that really affects your weight and your health. It&#8217;s the type of calorie. It&#8217;s true-the calories you eat are actually absorbed at different rates. And the different amounts of fiber, carbohydrates, protein, fat, and nutrients in these calories can have very different effects on your metabolism. There&#8217;s no difference between a thousand calories of kidney beans and a thousand calories of a low-fat muffin-until they&#8217;re metabolized.</p>
	<p>As you can see, food isn&#8217;t just a source of energy-it&#8217;s a source of operating instructions for your body. Calories 101</p>
	<p>So what is a calorie anyway? Simply put, a calorie is just a unit of energy. When we eat food, chemical processes that make up our metabolism break this food down and turn it into energy. Burning this energy lets us do what we need and want to do-from breathing to running a marathon. It&#8217;s like your car: You have to put fuel in it to make it run. For people, food is our fuel. Calories are what help us &quot;run.&quot;</p>
	<p>The Dieting Myth</p>
	<p>Just like high quality fuel is better for your car than the cheap stuff, some calories are better for our metabolism than others. That idea flies in the face of conventional diet wisdom, but it&#8217;s true-and science backs it up.</p>
	<p>For example, recent studies show that high-carb diets can boost insulin and blood sugar levels. The result? Weight gain (not to mention high cholesterol and triglycerides). On the other hand, people who eat a healthy low-carb diet that&#8217;s rich in vegetables, whole grains, beans, and lean animal protein-but consume more calories than low-fat dieters-actually lose more weight!</p>
	<p>As you can see, the kinds of calories you consume can have a big impact on weight gain, because different foods are metabolized in different ways. Food &quot;talks&quot; to your genes, giving your metabolism specific instructions-whether to lose weight or gain weight, speed up or slow down the aging process, increase or decrease your cholesterol level, and produce molecules that increase or decrease your appetite.</p>
	<p>No wonder you can feel like you&#8217;re doing everything right and still not lose weight!</p>
	<p>The Whole Truth</p>
	<p>If you want to lose weight and be healthy, you have to send your body the right messages. That means living in harmony with your genes.</p>
	<p>This means different things for different people. Depending on our genes, some of us may need more carbs, protein, or fat than others.</p>
	<p>But there&#8217;s one basic principle that works of everyone: Base your diet on whole, unprocessed foods. Foods that are in their natural state talk to your genes the most effectively-and were designed by nature to keep you at a healthy weight.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[	<p>You&rsquo;ll hear many times that single events can trigger a major episode of stress, depression and anxiety. The key word is &ldquo;trigger&rdquo;, because that is all a single event is. It doesn&rsquo;t actually CAUSE stress, depression or anxiety but it does trigger a sequence of behaviors that lead to mental trauma. But how does this happen? Descent into a stressful, depressive or anxious episode happens because of negative and catastrophic reactions to events you are confronted with. One event by itself simply isn&rsquo;t enough. There are many chain-reactions that take place before a person becomes highly stressed or depressed or anxious, but I&rsquo;m going to discuss one of the biggest ones: using one event to ascribe catastrophic meanings to all areas of your life &ndash; I call it &ldquo;generalizing&rdquo;.<br />Let&rsquo;s take a look at two events that most, if not all humans, will experience during their lifetime:<br />1. Loss of a job.<br />2. Death of a loved one.</p>
	<p>Loss of a job is a major event that can trigger depression. Please understand, the job loss itself cannot cause depression. It triggers a number of reactions, especially generalization and here&rsquo;s how it works:</p>
	<p>You lose your job and you start to think in general terms:</p>
	<p>&ldquo;Oh no, this is disastrous! How will I cope now? What will people think of me when I tell them? My job meant the whole world to me, now my world is falling apart. I&rsquo;m nothing without my job! How will I pay the bills? I won&rsquo;t be able to get another job and life will become a real struggle. Everything is going wrong and I&rsquo;ll never be happy again!&rdquo;</p>
	<p>Now, this reaction is typical of how a depressive episode can be triggered by one event. Powerful words &ndash; disastrous, nothing, struggle, everything, never &ndash; will stir fearful emotions within you. Self-esteem is being hit, doubt about your abilities is raised, and a catastrophic prediction of the future is made. The job has also been used to ascribe meaning to your whole life and now it&rsquo;s gone, a feeling that your life has no meaning is also present.</p>
	<p>A similar reaction will happen when you lose a loved one:</p>
	<p>&ldquo;I&rsquo;m devastated! He/She was my whole world, and now my world has fallen apart. Nothing will ever be the same again, I&rsquo;ll never be happy and I feel empty inside. Life holds nothing for me anymore and I don&rsquo;t know how I&rsquo;ll cope without him/her. &ldquo;</p>
	<p>Can you see the generalizations? Again, we have powerful, negative and emotionally charged phrases to ascribe meaning: whole world, fallen apart, nothing, never, anymore. And a catastrophic prediction for the future is present again.</p>
	<p>In both examples, one event has been carried into all areas of your life. With a job loss, enormous importance has been placed on the job itself and now the job has gone, these general meanings cause you serious distress. It&rsquo;s the same with losing a loved one. Meanings about your whole life have been placed on one person and their passing means your whole life is affected.</p>
	<p>In generalizing like this, descent into mental trauma is inevitable.</p>
	<p>To stop it, the key skill of keeping perspective is crucial. This means that you keep an event from one area of your life separate from other areas. For example, if the event is job loss, you react without generalizing:</p>
	<p>&ldquo;OK, I&rsquo;ve lost my job, but my job is just a way to earn income. It doesn&rsquo;t mean I won&rsquo;t find a better job nor does it mean that things will change for the worst. My social and home life will still remain the same and I&rsquo;ll carry on with my life just as I&rsquo;ve always done. One chapter in my working life has ended and a new one is about to begin.&rdquo;</p>
	<p>Do you see the difference in how keeping perspective and not using powerful, emotionally charged words and phrases will prevent fearful emotions arising?</p>
	<p>Please remember that no change is permanent as nothing lasts forever. Things will come into your life and things will move out of your life. It is the cycle of life. Keep things relevant to the area of your life they affect and you will maintain good mental health no matter what circumstances you are faced with.</p>
